The Cure for January Blahs
Any of you have the January Blahs like I have? I’ve got the cure: A trip to Alabama!
Last weekend I spoke at the Eastern Shores Women’s Conference in Daphne, Alabama. And let me tell you—those girls rock!
Such a wonderful group of women, from all over southeast Alabama, the Florida panhandle, and even Mississippi. They came from all kinds of different churches. I loved the diversity. I met women who were Baptists, Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Church of God, Covenanters—and that’s just for starters. The one thing we had in common was that we all wanted to do what the conference theme suggested: “Reaching Up…in Times Like These.” A theme chosen many months ago—but how timely!
Now I must say that the sunshine and warm breezes (they actually thought it was cold down there—but let me tell you, when it’s just been 10 below in your backyard, the 50’s and 60’s feel glorious!) were a big lift. But my favorite part of the weekend was the stories. Stories of God at work in women’s lives in powerful and amazing ways. And stories of women who were hanging in there even in the tough times when they felt they were still in God’s Waiting Room.
I heard these stories from both speakers and attenders at the conference. Probably my favorite memory was the opportunity to meet Deborah Jones, a walking miracle of a woman who calls herself “Ms. Happiness” because of the remarkable things God has done in her life.
I won’t steal her story, which she tells herself in her book “From the Guttermost to the Uttermost.” But let me just say that to look at the two of us, you would think we could not possibly be more different. Our lives, our families, our personal stories –it’s almost as if we came from two different universes. But we are sisters in the Lord. And God gave us the gift of a few moments of conversation over breakfast Saturday morning which turned out to be real God-moments for us both.
When she spoke later that day, she commented on our time together, which God had used in a mighty way to encourage her. “You know, ladies, we’re all so different here, ” she said (I’m paraphrasing a bit), “When I first saw that lady over there(pointing at me), I thought we were so different I couldn’t even talk to her. But we met at breakfast and she shared things from God I will never forget. Let me tell you, girls, that is one baaaaad sister, one baaaad sister!”
There are a lot of baaaad sisters down there in Alabama! And I hope I get to go back. Preferably in January.

After reading Emily's post, I think I want to go to MS for Thanksgiving. It sounds like they know the important things in life - Food, Fellowship, Fun and the Father!

I also like reading about having "Monovision". Most days, I need to remind myself of that, do you? I am looking around at my house,(particularly the floor that never seems to be clean), and I am now thinking, "it really only is a season...". Maybe for this season, when referring to my kitchen floor, I don't need monovision, I need NO vision! That way I cannot see all that grunge!

Thanks, Mississippi! Obviously you all have alot to offer in your great state. And to think the big facts I know about Mississippi USED to be 1.) That Elvis was born there and 2.) They have more Miss America's from MS than any other state. I can now add 3.) Broadmoor Baptist Church Gals Rock!!

"Monovision" in Mississippi - Emily shares about Linda

Linda in Mississippi
Wow!! We had a fabulous weekend with Linda here in the Southern state of
Mississippi. It was her first visit here. She is amazing "in person". We have
seen her videos but loved having her here with us for a weekend to speak and get
to know her better. She is very down to earth and personable. You must have
her speak for your group. You would be pleased.

I think she had lots of good Southern hospitality when she was here. On Monday when we were at our lastluncheon I reminded her to go ahead and fix her plate since she would be speaking soon. She laughed and said, "let me assure you, I have had plenty to eat this weekend. I will not go hungry." I laughed because you know we
Southern belles like to eat and fix food. We had been feasting all weekend.

We had a picture session with her with our local newspaper which was quite
interesting because the young moms brought their kids along for the photo shoot.
Let me mention we have quite a few kids in our church. Linda had lots of fun
watching the kids and was great with them. I think she enjoyed being with the
children and seeing us moms "in action" trying to hold them still for the photo
shoots. What were we thinking? She was laughing lots and we were all exhausted
when it was over.

On a more serious note, she reminded us to have monovision as mothers. We
should have one eye on the present and one on the future because we won't get
our report card until 21 years down the road when our kids are grown. Wow!!
That is lots to think about. I began to think, am I having this kind of vision?
Some days I think the terrible twos will never end and only see the here and
now, but the truth is that there is so much more ahead in my children's future.
I must look ahead. I was challenged by her comments. I pray I will continue to
work to develop a greater vision for what I want my children to become, growing
them to be more like Christ each day.

Quick Fix - Gray Hair

In this day and age, there are alot of "quick fixes". I have come across one that I think is pretty hilarious as well as pretty useful.
Hair Mascara...

Ever heard of it? Apparently it is used to cover gray without the salon visit. Just in case you are going to your 20 year high school reunion. No, cancel that. Go for the full salon deal if you are doing that. If you are going to the dentist, well, I think Hair Mascara would be fine for that.

Linda Plug********** Linda is not a "quick fix" speaker. She studies long and hard to deliver a message to your group that is meant for them. Prayer, preparation and perseverance all make for an effective time with your group.

If you don't have a "Mentor Mom", get one! As you may know, Linda Anderson has written a fantastic curriculum for a Mom's Program. I have participated in 2 states. It's great to get together weekly, monthly, or whatever works for your group, to fellowship, experience great teaching and encouragement and do one other thing.... EAT!

One of our mentor moms in our group is Barbara. When Barbara made this salad, I assured her I would name someone's child after her (because I am not having anymore)...

Fix this, it's good and good for you!

Napa Cabbage Salad

Mix together: 1 head napa cabbage, cut as for slaw
1 bunch green onions and tops

Melt 1/2 cup margarine in saucepan and saute the following until well coated:
2 packs of ramen noodles, broken into bite size pieces (no seasoning packet)
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1 package slivered almonds (about 1/2 cup?)

Let this mixture cool and toss with cabbage/onions mixture when ready to serve.

Dressing: 1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup vinegar
1 Tablespoon soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon pepper

When ready to serve, toss everything with the dressing.

Well, there is a Linda Anderson that sells real estate. How do I know? Because when I was about to post something on the blog, I went to lindaanderson.blogspot, leaving out the "ministries" part in the title of our blog. Turns out Linda is doing pretty well in the sales department.

Now on to My LINDA! Who is she? What does she love to do first thing in the AM? What is something that she likes that you would never suspect? A guilty pleasure perphaps? Mine is watching COPS and fantasizing that I would be brave enough to stop a drug dealer. Then, my husband walks in and reminds me I can barely stay a night in the house alone, when he is gone. Dream Wrecker...

I wonder, will you post questions for Linda? Let's get to know her. I mean, I know her to be a lady that reminds me a lot of what Princess Di might have looked like as she had grown to be a more mature mother. Do you agree? Let's hear those questions!

I also want to know how she found time to raise 3 children (whom you can meet on her mom to mom website - her blog), walked a standard poodle daily and wrote Mom to Mom? I accidentally fed my child out of a dirty bottle tonight because I was certain I had run the dishwasher today.
